Helping family, classmates, or teachers with technology can build useful skills. A trustworthy helper does not need to know every answer; they ask clear questions, protect data, and know when to involve an authorized adult or professional.
Start with safe basics
Ask what changed, read the exact error, and confirm what the person was trying to do. Try reversible steps first: check power and cables, verify settings, restart the app, install approved updates, or consult official documentation. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what worked.
Get permission before access
Never open messages, photos, grades, health information, or files unrelated to the problem. Let the owner type passwords and multifactor codes privately. Do not ask anyone to send credentials by chat. Before deleting, resetting, installing software, or opening a device, explain the risk and obtain clear permission from the owner and, where required, school staff or a caregiver.
Protect devices and accounts
Recommend unique passwords, multifactor authentication, backups, screen locks, and official app stores. Avoid pirated tools, unknown browser extensions, “cleaner” apps, and remote-access software from unsolicited callers. Never bypass school filters, monitoring, licenses, parental controls, or account permissions.
Document and escalate
Write down the device, symptoms, steps tried, and error messages without copying private content. Stop if there is smoke, heat, swelling, liquid damage, exposed wiring, suspected malware, financial fraud, stalking, or evidence of exploitation. Disconnect power only when safe and involve IT staff, a caregiver, the service provider, or emergency services as appropriate.
Build skill ethically
